Woodworking & Lumber Mills

EXTREME RISK

Wood dust is one of the most common and dangerous combustible dusts in manufacturing. Fine sawdust and sanding dust accumulate rapidly on surfaces, in ductwork, and inside equipment enclosures. Wood dust has a low minimum ignition energy and a wide explosive range — and solid-surface materials (engineered stone, MDF, composites) present similar or greater hazards.

Food Processing & Tobacco

HIGH RISK

Sugar, flour, starch, grain, and tobacco dusts are highly explosive and present in virtually every food and tobacco processing facility. The 2008 Imperial Sugar explosion — which killed 14 workers — was a stark reminder of the catastrophic consequences of uncontrolled sugar dust accumulation. Tobacco dust presents similar deflagration risks in processing and blending operations.

Metal Fabrication & Processing

EXTREME RISK

Aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and other reactive metal dusts represent some of the most dangerous combustible materials in industry. Metal dust fires and explosions are extremely difficult to suppress and can react violently with water-based suppression agents. Metal processing dust requires specialized DHA methodology and suppression system design.

Agriculture

HIGH RISK

Grain elevators, feed mills, and agricultural processing facilities have one of the highest historical rates of combustible dust incidents. Grain dust is highly explosive, and the confined spaces typical of grain handling infrastructure amplify explosion consequences. Agricultural products including corn, wheat, soybeans, and oats all present significant DHA requirements.

Plastics, Rubber & Composites

Composite materials — fiberglass, carbon fiber, and reinforced polymers — produce fine dusts during cutting and machining that present both explosion and inhalation hazards. Static electricity generation is a particular concern in plastics processing.
